I think Lil Gun is too fast of a burning powder for the 45-70. It is a high pressure powder. If you load it to little you cause a high pressure problem, if you load it to much you cause a high pressure problem. Hodgdon does not even list a load with it. Personally I would not use Lil-gun in my 45-70.

What powders work good for reduced loads in 45-70? I was afraid just using low charges of slow burning powder would give me lots of velocity swings with it having such a low load density. I have seen some load data with 2400 powder that looks like where I want to be at in velocity, just worried accuracy would suffer.

Unique is the best reduced loads in any of my 45-70 great powder it's worth seeking out its that good.

If you want a more bulky powder to better fill the case try some 5744. It was made for this purpose. 3031 is a great powder for potent 45-70 loads. As a reduced load I think you will be very dissapointed and maybe worse. Have never seen any load manuals recommend 3031 for reduced loads.
