I have played a few times during light or moderate showers with no noticeable ill effects. Full disclosure: I am usually playing an inexpensive ebay sax outside.Both the Reference 54 and AWO1 sound great; the AWO1 was just a smidge brighter. I bought only last week the book "Taming the Saxophone vol.3" by Pete Thomas from his website. I've been happily surprised, and not only by the fast response and delivery. In my experience, the Mark III is the most powerful and clearest of all FG models. Very direct sound. I prefer something a little more complex, so I favor the Mark IV over the Mark III. What you noticed on the side of the beak is the printer seam, all our mouthpieces have one. It does not alter the sound.
