Not knowing what was happening, I then attempted to just skip the attack, but then the game "locked" me, it wouldn't end my turn at all and I had to force close the game.

That requires at least 5 scenarios before attempting it, and each of those five scenarios would award 6xp if playing on normal, or 4xp if playing on easy. That means you'd only have to earn 3xp per scenario to get to level 2 (5xp per scenario if playing all on easy). That should be pretty simple. I don't know if it was fixed and then broken again in an update or something but it appears impossible to actually damage the Prime Demon in any way. I can smack the altar until it dies (and have done so twice) but the Demon just sits there, laughing with full HP and invincible.
